Chris Lyter

Chris Lyter is a lifelong resident of central Pennsylvania. Using palette knife and brush, Chris employs dynamic color and contrasting values applied with a combination of smooth, refined brushstrokes and areas of thick, textured impasto to produce immersive, three-dimensional works of art.

Creating abstract artworks opens his mind. His process for creating an abstract painting is free flowing and natural, allowing him to follow the painting as it evolves rather than attempt to adhere to a preconceived notion of the end result. He often only has a vague idea of color palette and composition when he begins painting, at times ending up with something vastly different from what he may have initially imagined. This, to him, is the adventure of painting abstraction. The process forces spontaneity. The painting can become a reflection of the thoughts, emotions, and mood he experiences while he’s working.

Some of his paintings are abstract representations of recognizable material such as a landscape, seascape, or sky. Others are pure abstraction composed of seemingly random shapes, lines, forms, colors, and values. All attempt to convey depth beyond simple paint on canvas. They are an exploration of the less obvious; some dreamlike and ethereal, others bold and energetic. For him each painting represents an escape from the usual and commonplace, into a sort of alternate reality. They cause him to question, wonder, and think.

Chris’s paintings can be seen in galleries, venues, and private collections throughout the country and the world. He lives and works in rural Perry County, Pennsylvania with his wife Lisa.
