Johanne Brouillette
Johanne Brouillette, born in 1969, is a Canadian abstract artist who has been painting in her Montréal studio for over 25 years. Brouillette painted figurative landscapes in oil for many years, but became bored. She decided to attend an abstract workshop in 2016 and immediately found her new passion. The artist has since taken numerous workshops, specialized courses and residencies to perfect her art, which she now considers a daily necessity.
Influenced by Automatistes painters such as Riopelle, Borduas and Ferron, she has found freedom of expression in abstraction pursued through automatism: an instinctive, unpremeditated form of creating art, and has developed her own distinctive style. Fascinated with textures and layers the artist uses acrylics, collage, ashes, graphite and plaster to create complex, multi-layered paintings, using a mostly monochromatic color palette. Her paintings can have up to 15 or 20 layers and take days, weeks or even months to complete. Her artworks have been in regional, national and international juried exhibits and have been awarded several prizes.
“For me, painting is much more than just shapes, lines or color. Painting helps me to understand myself, my weaknesses, my strengths, my dreams, memories, desires and fears. My paintings express this deep connection and dialogue we build with one another as they are brought to life.”
